Lahore Travel Guide 2026
Lahore is the cultural heart and soul of Pakistan. With 2,000 years of history, Mughal architecture that rivals the Taj Mahal, the most legendary street food in South Asia, and a creative energy that pulses through its ancient lanes, Pakistan's second city is an overwhelming sensory experience. The Walled City's narrow bazaars, the majesty of the Badshahi Mosque at sunset, the chaos of Food Street at midnight, and the electrifying Wagah Border ceremony — Lahore delivers one of the most unforgettable city experiences in Asia. As Lahoris themselves say: “Lahore Lahore hai” — Lahore is Lahore. There is nowhere else like it.
Top Attractions
Badshahi Mosque
Built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1673, the Badshahi Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and Lahore's most iconic landmark. Its red sandstone and white marble facade, flanked by four minarets, creates a breathtaking sight, especially at sunset when the stone glows orange. The courtyard can hold 100,000 worshippers. Entry is free; dress modestly and women should bring a headscarf. Go at sunset for the most dramatic views and evening prayers.
Lahore Fort (Shahi Qila) — UNESCO
Adjacent to the Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating from the 11th century. Highlights include the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) with its dazzling mirror-mosaic interior, the Naulakha Pavilion with its curving marble roof, and the massive Alamgiri Gate. Allow 2-3 hours. Entry: PKR 500 for foreigners.
The Walled City
Lahore's Old City is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, crumbling Mughal-era havelis, spice markets, craft workshops and street food stalls. Enter through the monumental Delhi Gate and lose yourself in the bazaars. Key sights inside the Walled City include Wazir Khan Mosque (1634, the most beautifully decorated mosque in Lahore), Cooco's Den (rooftop restaurant with views), and the Shahi Hammam (restored Mughal bathhouse).
Shalimar Gardens — UNESCO
Built by Shah Jahan in 1641, these terraced Mughal gardens feature over 400 fountains across three levels. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest surviving examples of Mughal garden design. Best visited in late afternoon. Entry: PKR 300.
Wagah Border Ceremony
Every evening at sunset, Pakistani and Indian soldiers perform an elaborate flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah Border crossing, 30 km from Lahore. The atmosphere is electric — thousands of spectators on both sides cheer, dance and wave flags as soldiers goose-step and slam the gates shut. Arrive by 3 PM for good seats. Free entry. One of the most unique spectacles in the world.
Food Street (Gawalmandi)
Lahore's legendary food scene is concentrated on Food Street, where restaurants line both sides serving the city's famous dishes. Must-eat: nihari (slow-cooked overnight beef stew) from Waris Nihari, seekh kebabs from Lakshmi Chowk, paye (trotter soup) from Phajja Siri Paye, and chicken karahi. Prices: PKR 300-1,000 per dish ($1-4).
