NICOP Guide 2026 - National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis

The NICOP is the most important identity document for every Pakistani living abroad. This guide covers everything you need to know about applying, renewing, and using your NICOP in 2026.

Why NICOP matters: Without a valid NICOP, you cannot buy or sell property in Pakistan, open a bank account, claim inheritance, or vote in Pakistan elections. It also serves as a visa-free travel document for entry to Pakistan.

What is NICOP?

The National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) is a smart identity card issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to Pakistani citizens residing outside Pakistan. Introduced to replace the older paper-based identity system, the NICOP is a chip-enabled card that contains your biometric data, photograph, and personal information.

The NICOP is distinct from the regular CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card) issued to residents within Pakistan. While both serve as proof of Pakistani citizenship, the NICOP is specifically designed for overseas Pakistanis and includes additional security features for international use.

How to Apply for NICOP

Option 1: Apply at Pakistan Embassy or Consulate
  1. Locate your nearest embassy that offers NADRA services. Not all missions have NADRA counters, so check in advance on our embassy directory.
  2. Book an appointment through the embassy website or by phone. Walk-ins may be accepted but appointments are strongly recommended.
  3. Visit in person with all required documents. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) will be captured at the embassy.
  4. Pay the fee at the embassy counter (cash, card, or bank draft depending on embassy).
  5. Receive tracking number to monitor your application status on the NADRA website.
  6. Collect or receive by post - your NICOP will be delivered by courier to your registered address, typically within 6-8 weeks.
Option 2: Apply Online via NADRA Portal
  1. Visit the NADRA online portal at id.nadra.gov.pk
  2. Create an account or log in with your existing credentials
  3. Select "NICOP" as the card type and fill in the application form
  4. Upload scanned copies of required documents
  5. Pay the fee online (credit/debit card or bank transfer)
  6. Important: You will still need to visit an embassy or NADRA centre for biometric verification
  7. Once biometrics are verified, your NICOP will be processed and delivered
Tip: Online applications are often faster because the data entry is done in advance. You only need to visit the embassy for biometrics, which takes 10-15 minutes.

Common NICOP Issues and Solutions

Ensure your name spelling matches exactly across passport, previous CNIC, and application form. If your name was transliterated differently on different documents, provide a sworn affidavit confirming both spellings refer to the same person. Father's name must also match across all documents.

Yes, you can apply with an expired passport if you also provide your previous CNIC/NICOP. However, it is strongly recommended to renew your passport first. Some embassies may not accept applications with expired passports without additional documentation.

Contact NADRA's helpline or your embassy with your tracking number. Delays can occur due to courier issues, incorrect address, or backlogs at NADRA. If the card was returned to NADRA, you may need to update your address and request re-delivery (additional courier fee may apply).

Some embassies have limited NADRA appointment slots. Try booking early morning, check for cancellations, or contact the embassy to be placed on a waiting list. During Ramadan and Eid periods, appointment availability may be reduced.

NICOP Tips for Overseas Pakistanis

  • Apply early: Do not wait until your NICOP expires. Start the renewal process 3-6 months before expiry to avoid any gaps in validity.
  • Keep copies: Store photocopies and digital scans (front and back) of your NICOP in a secure location. This helps if the card is lost or stolen.
  • Update address: If you move, update your address with NADRA. An outdated address can cause delivery failures for your renewed NICOP.
  • Family registration: Register your spouse and children with NADRA to maintain your family tree records. This is essential for inheritance and property matters.
  • NICOP for children: Children under 18 can get a Juvenile NICOP (JNICOP). This is useful for travel and school registration in Pakistan.
  • Roshan Digital Account: Your NICOP number is required to open a Roshan Digital Account, which allows you to invest and bank in Pakistan from abroad.
